MT CASS WIND FARM
MainPower has been investigating local wind generation opportunities for a number of years, as part of our vision of energy self sufficiency for our region.
Mt Cass is a prominent hill six kilometres east of Waipara. The proposal is for a wind farm to be situated on 6.5 kilometres of ridge running north-east from the summit of Mt Cass.
The Mt Cass wind farm will be an exciting development for North Canterbury with the potential to provide significant benefits. Despite the fact our region has a lot of renewable energy resources there is no local generation – more than a million dollars leaves here every week to other generators.
Depending on the turbines chosen, the Mt Cass wind farm could generate enough for between 11,000 and 24,000 homes. That's enough energy to power all the homes in the Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts.
